Team Information

What is F1 in Schools?

  • F1 in Schools Ltd. is a not-for-profit company established with committed partners to provide an exciting yet challenging educational experience through the magnetic appeal of Formula One.

  • F1 in Schools is the only global multi-disciplinary challenge in which teams of students aged 9 to 19 deploy CAD/CAM software to collaborate, design, analyse, manufacture, test, and then race miniature compressed air powered F1 cars.

  • It is a unique global platform for the promotion of Formula One and partners to a youth market.

  • Teams must raise sponsorship and manage budgets to fund research, travel and accommodation.

  • The challenge inspires students to use IT to learn about physics, aerodynamics, design, manufacture, branding, graphics, sponsorship, marketing, leadership, teamwork, media skills and financial strategy, and apply them in a practical, imaginative, competitive and exciting way.

The Team:

The Blue Rockets Racing Team is made up of 4 very close friends, we are very deticated to the project and work as a team to get all of the elements of the project complete.

My name is Joshua Ocone and I am a Year 12 Student studying at The Castle School Sixth Form in Thornbury. I put myself forward for the managerial role in the challenge and was later elected to be   the Team Manager. I chose this role because I feel I am capable of leading a team, abiding to deadlines and motivating everyone involved. In terms of management, I have some unique methods like feeding my team lots of sugary snacks and chips to keep them going! I decided to participate in the F1 in Schools competition because I am interested in STEM and love working to complete challenges in a team. Also F1 in Schools opens the door to a whole new area of STEM that I have not explored before (including CAD, CAM and CNC machining).

I’m Benjamin Payne and I too am a Year 12 Student studying at The Castle School Sixth Form. I am  the Resource Manager. I felt that I was suited to this role because I am organised and great at arranging the delivery of goods to schedule. A good example of this is the development of the Pit Display. I chose to do F1 in Schools because I am very interested in STEM and love to work as part of a team. I’m also Deputy Manager of the team, as I have good managerial qualities, and act as cover for Josh when necessary.

My name is Daniel Church and I am a Year 12 Student also studying at The Castle School Sixth Form. I chose to hold the role of Design Engineer. The reason for this choice was mainly because I like designing and testing different ideas and improving them. I find it rewarding to solve problems  to find solutions. I chose to do F1 in Schools because it is a fun and innovative activity that will be rewarding to take part in. I love a challenge and particularly enjoy the opportunity of creating a model F1 car, whilst complying to all the constraints of real Formula One—it’s brilliant fun and great for my creative streak!

I’m Alistair White-Horne and I am a Year 12 Student studying at Castle School’s Sixth Form. My role is 'Manufacturing Engineer’; this involves using CNC technologies to machine our model F1 car. I chose this role because I find it distinctly satisfying to take a block and turn it into a 3D design or model. I decided to participate in the F1 in Schools competition because I thought it would be a really good experience and it would help me develop skills that I will need in the workplace later in life. I am also the lead Graphical Designer for the team – I feel that I am suited to this as one of my hobbies is creating artwork and graphic design using the program Blender. My work in Blender can be seen in the renders of our car.
